Report Writing

A report is a brief account of an event that has already taken place.

Points to Remember:

·       Provide a suitable title/heading.

·       Write the name of the reporter.

·       Write in past tense.

·       Mention the place, date, time and other relevant facts about the event.

·       Develop ideas (causes, reasons, consequences, opinions) logically.

·       Write in a less formal and more descriptive manner, while writing a report for a school magazine.

·       Present your ideas and impressions to make the report interesting.

 

We have two types of reports in our syllabus: newspaper report & school magazine report.

It is of 7 marks. Word limit: 100 words (Compulsory English); 150-200 words (English Literature)

Illustrative Example:

Q. A major bus mishap which left several people seriously injured took place at Grand Road, Ajmer. Luckily no life was lost. Collect the information from the eyewitnesses and send a report in 100 words to ‘The Daily News’. You are Vimi, a reporter.         (Newspaper Report)

1 February, 20xx, Ajmer: A major bus mishap took place at Grand Road yesterday at about 10 a.m. It resulted in serious injuries to almost twelve of the twenty-five passengers who were on board the bus. Luckily though, there was no loss of life. An eyewitness accounts how the high speeding bus overturned when it took a sharp turn in an attempt to avert a collision with a truck that was coming in the wrong direction.

The authorities have arrested the truck driver for his negligence. The bus driver could not be taken into custody for over-speeding as he is admitted in hospital with grievous injuries. The state government has announced a compensation of 25,000 for seriously injured.  A state-level inquiry has also been ordered into the mishap as it is the third accident at this very location in last one month.

Seminar on Water Conservation

Blue Mountain School, Sirohi organised a seminar on ‘Water Conservation’ as part of the World Water Day Celebrations on 22 March, 20xx. The main aim of this seminar was to remind us all about the need to save water as it is a precious source for our survival.

Distinguished environmentalists and eminent personalities were our guest speakers and they reiterated the need not only of conserving water but also spoke at length on how to conserve water by stressing upon the fact that each drop of water is precious. Prof. Sudha, an eminent environmentalist, suggested rain-water harvesting as one of the best ways to conserve water. She suggested that to ensure availability of water for the future generations the withdrawal of fresh water from an ecosystem should not exceed its natural replacement rate. The seminar concluded on the note that water conservation is the most cost-effective, environmentally sound way to reduce our demand for water and so each one of us must do our bit towards improving water management to enhance optimum use of water. The school Principal Ms. Rama thanked the guests for giving their valuable time to encourage the students to save water for a bright future.

Write a report in 100 words to be published in your school magazine. You are Heena, Secretary of the Social Club of your school.

Q. Write a report as an eyewitness to the fire accident that occurred in your neighbourhood. Your report should be within 100 words. Invent the necessary details. You are Kajal, a resident of Skyline Apartment, Sikar.
