Glory at Twilight by Bhabani Bhattacharya
UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT
1. Give reasons for the following
a. Satyajit attending the village wedding.
Satyajit went to the village wedding to keep up appearances. In the past, he had become very wealthy and respected in the village. People looked up to him so much that they expected him to help pay for Srinath's daughter's wedding. He felt he had to attend to maintain his reputation, even though his situation had changed.
b. Satyajit’s recollection of the forgerer when he was
on the train.
While on the train, Satyajit reflected on how his life had come full circle. He had started as a clerk, risen to become a manager, and now had lost everything. This made him realize that quick success without hard work often leads to failure. His success hadn't come from his own efforts, and now he was paying the price.
c. Srinath and his family members’ eager expectation of Satyajit’s arrival.
Srinath and his family were excited because they saw Satyajit as a wealthy, successful person. They thought he would help them financially with the wedding, as he had a reputation for being generous. They didn't know his fortune had changed.
d. Srinath’s disappointment with Satyajit.
Srinath needed to give 2,001 rupees to his in-laws during the wedding. He expected Satyajit, who was known to be rich, would easily help with this small amount. When Satyajit couldn't provide the money, Srinath felt let down, not knowing that Satyajit had lost his wealth.
e. Satyajit’s feeling that he was an impostor.
Satyajit felt like a fake because he was living two lives. On the outside, he enjoyed people treating him with respect and admiration. But inside, he felt guilty about not acknowledging those who had helped him succeed. He also felt dishonest about attending the wedding knowing he couldn't help financially, yet still trying to maintain his image as a wealthy man.
f. Satyajit not disclosing his present financial
status to his uncle.
Satyajit kept his financial troubles secret because he was ashamed. He had become famous in society and was seen as a successful person. He didn't want to lose people's respect, especially his uncle's. He couldn't bring himself to admit that he was no longer wealthy and couldn't help others as he used to.
2. 2. Describe the cycle of events in Satyajit’s life that brought him back to where he began.
The Rise and Fall of Satyajit Satyajit's life story is like a circle. He started as a simple bank clerk, then quickly rose to become a bank manager. This sudden success brought him respect and admiration from everyone. However, his success wasn't earned through hard work but came through others' help. Unfortunately, he began to look down on the very people who had helped him succeed. His fortune didn't last - he lost everything and found himself back where he started. This taught him an important lesson: success that comes too easily can disappear just as quickly. The story shows how pride and unearned success can lead to a dramatic fall.
